Ashtanga Ayurveda

In an ancient time, Ayurveda was divided into its eight branches. The first text on Ayurveda was composed by Brahma the creator of the universe. The text was named on his name the Brahma Samhita. It contains 10,000 rhymes. Presently this book is unavailable.


The eight branches of Ayurveda are-

  1. Bala (Paediatrics, Maternity & Gynaecology)
  2. This branch deals with all aspects that required for getting a healthy child, about the diseases of childhood and their cures. It also deals with the knowledge how to keep a child healthy. This branch also deals with the gynecology and maternity along with pediatrics.

  3. Graha (Psychotherapy)
  4. It deals with the spiritual effects on life. The Doctrine of Ayurveda believes that the planetary system of the universe has a great effect on well being of life. There is no basic text available at present time. So very little is known about this branch.

  5. Kaya (medicine)
  6. It deals with all the Physio-pathological aspects of life including its health and hygienic aspects. The Charaka is the main text on this branch of Ayurveda.

  7. Urdhwaanga (ENT & Opthalmology)
  8. It deals with the diseases and treatment of Urdhwanga i.e. Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat & Mouth including teeth.

  9. Shalya (Surgery)
  10. It deals with the diseases and treatment of Urdhwanga i.e. Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat & Mouth including teeth.

  11. Danstra (Toxicology)
  12. It deals with the removal of a foreign particle or the body parts that is painful or harmful to the person to lead a healthy life. At ancient time Ayurved was very famous for its surgery but due to its declination at present only a few methods of surgery are in practice. Susruta is the main text on surgery. The basic method of surgery is well described in Ayurveda that can be a guideline for modern surgery.

  13. Jara(Rejuvenating therapy or Gerontology)
  14. It deals with the various therapy or treatment that can make a man fit & healthy so that he feels to be young. This therapy prevents to develop the sign and symptoms of old age. Most of the medicines described for this purpose are antioxidant that prevents the wear and tear of the body.

  15. Vrishan (Sexual boosting therapy or Aphrodisiac)
  16. This branch deals with the aphrodisiac type of medicine.These types of medicine give physical and mental strength to the body along with sexual boost.
